Helpful advice…
People crack me up.
I have had a number of well intentioned people say things to me with an earnest desire to help, but who have had the opposite effect.
I don’t begrudge this, but at times it has really hurt. At other times it has made me laugh, but mostly it just baffles me why people think that comments like the following are helpful:
In third place:
“Have you considered couples counselling?”
And an all time classic in second place:
“You’re not getting any younger and there are plenty more fish in the sea.”
Storming in to first place:
“What you need to do is to go out and find yourself a gorgeous man with brains and money and get yourself pregnant. Don’t look at me like that, things aren’t always as cut and dry as you’d like to think. But at least that way you could get on with your life knowing that you had child support on the way.”
How did she know that my lifelong dream was to be a single mother who extorts child support payments from a handsome stranger?
Ahhh, you have to laugh…
